Young anglers bravely go where no young anglers have gone before…
It’s amazing the number of times that us old experienced rods are sometimes beaten to the fish, and it was certainly the case today with a number of young anglers at the fishery with the schools off for the long weekend.

I hope Ciaran waits for the oven - he looks as though he's about to go in for some sushi!
First to the fish today was Ciaran Cassidy who’s eight.
It’s not his first time fishing, but he did insist that it was the first time with his new net!
So that must count for something.
And I promise that his new net wasn’t attached to a trawler – he used a rod and line just like everyone else!
His bag was 7 lb 1oz and maggot and grub popped up with poly balls on said rod and line, did the trick for him and his dad David.

This young lady showed dad Hugh the way to do it!
Claire is seven, although took great pains to insist that she’s eight in a few days.
I wonder at what point in life does a lady stop trying to be older and start trying to be younger?….Anyway, I digress..
The point is that she beat both her dad Hugh and her uncle to the first fish between them.

The big weigh-in and one of the best three-fish-bag of the day
And finally, but by no means least, the two young lads on the left.
Thomas aged 13 and Ryan aged 10 (who insisted that his fish was the biggest one!) had a combined bag of just over 11 lbs.
Fair play to these fine anglers.
We could all learn a few things from them, not least the enjoyment and enthusiasm that they so obviously display.
There’ll no doubt be a few more youngsters at the fishery over the next few weeks and months – and you’ll be most welcome.
Just a couple of other wee announcements.
There are some great deals on in tackle in the shop at the moment, including some great bargin combo’s.
For instance there’s a great bait rod a rod with a RRP of £29.99 that is for sale for just that, but with a free Okuma stinger XR50 reel (worth £13.95) thrown in!
Nice action on the rod and well finished, and as for the reel, it too has a smooth but firm action and has a silent anti-reverse system and drag adjuster at the back, just the thing for playing that bigger fish. A really nice outfit for beginners or improvers in bait fishing.
We now have 25 competitors for the MacMillan Cancer Charity ‘Big Fish’ coimpetition- so there is only 5 places left! Don’t delay in getting your form in.
And finally, a reminder that our bait pond and fly pond competition for the Carbeth fluff chuckers and maggot dookers, will be taking place on Sunday the 31st May.
And finally finally, just back from the new Star Trek movie.
Brilliant.
But go fishing first!
