Into May we go….

Carbeth is fishing pretty well at the moment, despite some unusual weather conditions.

Ranging from bright sunshine one minute to drizzle and darkness the other, there’s certainly nothing dour about the fishing!

The bait pond provided good returns yesterday, Saturday 2nd May, with fish being caught both off the bottom and off the top – figure that one out if you can!

The prevailing wind proved to be a factor and after a bit of explanation, this young man and his father lifted into a couple of nice trout. It was David Stewart’s first time fishing, so we were delighted to see him catch on his debut. He also will never let his dad forget that his fish was bigger!

The top pond really came into it’s own too, with most folk who wandered up there, catching at least one fish. We’ve been taking quite a few group bookings for this wee gem of a pond, so if you and ten to fifteen of your pals want an exclusive session, do get in touch: enquiries@carbethfishery.com

The fly pond too was fishing well, and some really strange contradictions going on!

As I walked around, scratching my head, folk were catching on varying flies from orange fritz to buzzers through to gold head damsels.

You know the old adage, bright flies for bright weather, dark for dark etc – it just didn’t seem to make much sense.

Just like the weather I guess!

Finally, for those of the fluff chucking persuasion, we’re into May and that can mean only one thing.

Ephemeroptera. (Ok, the big man is showing off here and if I’m honest, I had to google it)!

Rithrigena germanica subimago on equisetum hyemale: Try saying that the next time someone asks what fly your using!

The mayfly are coming.

Again, it’s pretty strange weather-wise at the moment.

I distinctly remember nabbing fish off the top during prolific hatches in April of last last year, and the year before that.

To date I’ve only seen two of the wee beasties so far, but I’m keeping a close eye for signs of a bigger hatch.

Rest assured, I’ll post a blog as soon as they start to appear, so keep checking the site, or subscribe to the RSS feed to be updated automatically.

Finally, finally….. if anyone wants to get to grips with fly fishing, and take part in the mayfly feast, we are now offering tution from beginner to improvers, so do get in touch.

We had a client last week who caught a fish on his first lesson, it was a great day and brilliant to see.

Hope you too have a great day sometime soon at Carbeth.

Tight lines (and no’ on one of the wooden huts like I did last week!)

Many thanks for a great days fishing. My son Davids first time out fishing and he caught his first trout. He’s over the moon and has well and truly caught the fishing bug.
My thanks also to the gentleman in the hut (Paul?) who gave us such friendly advice and made us feel so welcome.

See you again soon
