Finally, the mayflies are here and other good things!
Yup, the weather is nearly, almost, maybe, catching up to match the calander month!
I caught my first fish of the year ‘off the top’ on Friday last, and only getting to boast about it now!
I was changing over from lures to buzzers and was just about to fit a bright orange pimp (for those who don’t know what that is…it’s just a fancy name for a float really!) when I saw a small dun mayfly, and thought to myself – “why not just suspend the buzzer under a mayfly”, after all, I’d prefer to have my ‘float’ have a chance of nailing a fish!
I’ve been tying some detached body mayflies that I was shown by that genius of fly dressers Davie McPhail. (Fly dressers – check out his flies and demo’s on youtube, they’re brilliant!)
With a foam body that sits really well in the water, these wee crackers will take a buzzer suspended underneath without going under.
I swear – first cast – the fly hit the water and bang – into my first fish of the mayfly season.
Now I hadn’t seen any other mayflies after that initial lonely wee beastie and couldn’t temp any others to the top but we have had some more proligic hatches over the past few days, so worth a go if they’re on the trout menu.
That’s enough about me and my recent adventures, and to be honest, I’ve been thinking that for a while!
You’ll soon get fed up with my prattle (if not already!) So I’m keen to encourage any of you who visit us at the site and fishery to write your own thoughts, stories and tips.
If you feel like putting something down, then just email me and I’ll form it into one of the regular blogs. I can’t promise to use them all, but please do try.
Here’s the first one, and it’s from Scotty McCorquodale in Clydebank:
“I’ve been up at the Carbeth fishery once a week in the past month, ( I’m a maggot dooker) and there has only been the one occasion when I didn’t reach my bag limit, and no blanks.
“I had three fish yesterday (the 18th May) and the place is fishing very well at the moment and looking good.”
“Unfortunately I can’t make the first Maggot Dookers competition on the 31st of May but looking forward to the next one after that”.
“Keep up the good work, and very tight lines”.
Thanks for the kind words Scotty, I’m glad you’ve been doing so well.
We’re not just looking for glowing praise by the way (although it is nice to get!). If you have any comments or suggestions, for good or bad, or any tips you’d like to share, just email us enquiries@carbethfishery.com and I’ll take it from there.
All the best to you and the tightest of lines to our maggot dookers and fluff chuckers!
Paul
