Big Fish Fest at Carbeth!

Hi,

We’ve had a great time in recent days at the fishery, with good fishing returns and lots of big fish.

The competition on Sunday threw up no less than five big fish, most of them just shy of the 6lb mark and two over!

The previous days also provided some great fish, more of which at the end of the blog.

First to the competition. It was very well attended, especially on the fly pond with eighteen fluff chuckers taking part.

Up to the whistle (9am) Cammy thought that he was going to be the only maggot dooker and already had his sight on the prize without having to dook a worm!

Alas, (for Cammy) a bunch of lads came in just in time to compete.

Lets take the bait pond first.

"Here mate, cop a load of this then!"

First big fish of the day fell to a popped up worm by angler Joe McKenna.
He had already had a fish on his first cast and was well chufffed to lean into this 5lb 9oz rainbow.
You can see Joe in the background, obviously well pleased for his pa!

Not to be outdone, his fishing partner William Smith picked up his own big fish of 5lb 11oz, and the battle was on.

There was plenty of fish being caught on a day pretty good conditions wise, over-cast and not too strong a wind.

The last big fish from the bait pond was caught by Paul Renfrew and was the biggest of the lot!paul_renfrew

Weighing in at 6lb 5 oz he should have won the biggest fish prize in the competition but he had elected not to enter.

Strange one really when you consider that it doesn’t cost anything extra to take part!

Eventual winners for the maggot dookers were Willie (biggest fish) and Joe with the heaviest bag.

On the fly pond action was brisk with (from memory) four anglers making thier bag of three.

Winner with most fish caught then returned was Stevie Divers who also won last month and very much the man to beat nowadays.

Heaviest bag went to Alex Douglas who also won two months ago!

His bag was most certainly helped by this beautiful trout of over 5lbalex

The previous day, Saturday, was quite a good days fishing too.

Al Bargoti had this cracking 6lb 8oz fish on a wee bloodworm. al

And I witnessed Sammy here catch two fish in the 5-6lb region:sammy

The reason why there’s no fish with him, is that he always fishes catch and release.

Well done Sammy.

Just one wee final note from Graham. He’s going to get a big board put up outside the lodge withand we’re going to have a heaviest fish and heaviest bag of three  (maximum) competition so we can put them up for all to see. There’ll be a choice of a bottle or a free ticket to the winner of the month.

So make sure a fishery official gets your big fish and heavy bag details! Please always put in a return when you’ve finished your session. That way we can accurately keep track of stocks.

Till the next time, tight lines

Paul
