A ‘tough’ start to June but first week ends well

2009 June 7
by Paul

Moving on very briefly from my previous post where my journalistic skills (and basic intelligence) let me down….here’s the second post of the day!

As the headline states, it’s been a tough start to June in the fishery with sweltering temperatures, bright sunshine and little or no wind making conditions, for the fishing at least, very difficult.

Most people didn’t care to be honest and I don’t blame them.

It was nice to ditch the fleece and waterproofs for a wee bit.

Despite the challenging conditions folk who were willing to perservere and try all sorts of tactics generally won through in the end.

Today, Sunday 7th June, however was a complete joy to be on the water.

Jennifer was eventually talked into holding one of her fish!

Jennifer was eventually talked into holding one of her fish!

Overcast, yet warm with a wee breeze, it proved to be a really great day. Particularly it has to be said though, for the fluff chuckers.

I was particularly chuffed for  a couple of newcomers to the chucking of fluff.

Jennifer Ewart caught two fine rainbows on a buzzer at her very first attempt at fly fishing.

Most of you will know just what a big deal that is, and I mean it most sincerely Jennifer, that it’s no mean feat. Very well done.

Her brother Jonathon is a dab hand by now and proved it with a brace of his own.

So not bad with one newcomer, you can guess at how pleased we were to have two on the same day!

Gavin Shaw ,seen here, also caught two fish at the first time of asking (and took great pains to mention that he beat his dad who only took one!)

How many times recently have we seen this?

(see earlier blogs).

I must stress that this is highly unusual, so for those who are still to catch on the fly, do perservere – or at least ask one of these folk, cause I’ve no idea what the magic ingredient is – I wish I knew!!!

As for the rest of the days visitors, all manner of tactics were working, from fishing nymphs deep and slow, to buzzers a couple of feet down, all the way to the top of the water with mayfly.

A real ‘anything goes’ day.

Equally, on the bait pond, there were full bags from folk fishing off the bottom , to those fishing a couple of feet under the bubble float with maggot and grub the bait of choice in most instances.

A really nice change from the previous ‘head-scratcher-days’ (again, see earlier blogs!)

I’m not going to say that everyone hit fish today because some didn’t, but overall all the ponds fished very well.

Finally and by no means least, another honorable mention to another debutant.

Young Morgan, aged five, is seen here with her dad Scott MacDonald who beat him to the fish and took great joy in telling all she could meet.

So not a bad end to what already has been a great week for one reason or another.
